Ukraine drones target refinery, power plants near Moscow, Russia says

Ukraine launched drones against power plants and a refinery near Moscow in an overnight attack, Moscow said on Sunday.
The Russian defense ministry said on Telegram that the country’s air defense systems shot down 158 Ukrainian drones over 15 Russian regions, including nine over the Russian capital and its region. The Konakovo Power Station and the Moscow Oil Refinery were specific targets of the assault, according to Russian officials.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drones caused a fire at the refinery, according to a Reuters report.
Ukraine’s drone offensive comes after a week of massive missile and drone attacks from Russia, which led to the loss of one of Ukraine’s U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets.
Last week, Russia has “used more than 160 missiles of various types, 780 guided aerial bombs and 400 attack drones of various types” against Ukraine, the country’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Telegram.
The commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on Sunday that the military situation was “difficult” around the area where Moscow is focusing its main assault in eastern Ukraine. “But all the necessary decisions at all levels are being made without delay,” he added.
On Friday, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Andriy Yermak, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, presented top U.S. officials with potential targets in Russia during a trip in Washington, on the heels of Kyiv’s surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region in August.
